5 Reasons Why I Love HBCUs

June 19, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Energy, Style

As a kid, The Cosby Show used to be my addiction.  Each week I anticipated seeing that family on TV who resembled my family and other families I knew.  I was in awe of the story lines, Denise Huxtable's fashion choices, and the positive perception the show exuded.  I remember my mother scolding me about something, and I bravely stood up and said to her, "Clair Huxtable wouldn't talk to her children like that."   Yea, I was hypnotized by the show.  Therefore you can imagine my excitement when Denise went off to college and A Different World was born.  I thought I had died and gone to television heaven.

After witnessing the characters on A Different world, their colorful personalities, stylish gear, trendy hairstyles, the camaraderie, and how proud they were to be at a historical institution - I made up my mind at a young age that Hillman College was my school of choice.  It wasn't until later that my dreams were deferred when I discovered that Hillman only existed in the television world.  "What?  Hillman isn't for real Momma?"  I was disappointed.

My disappointment didn't last long because I was later introduced to nonfiction Historically Black Colleges/Universities..  My mother would take my brother and I to college Greek shows and football games so that we could see what campus life was actually like.  We were amazed at the sea of African American people we saw gathering together for the pursuit of higher learning.  When I actually got the chance to attend an HBCU, I developed a deeper understanding of why they are so essential in our culture.  Below are five reasons why HBCUs are life.

1.  The Culture – The atmosphere feels like your old neighborhood or high school. You feel like you're a part of a family when attending an HBCU.  You are the majority, and you fit in everywhere you go.  You don't have to be quiet in a classroom because you feel that your opinions don't matter.  You can be just who you were meant to be.  There are no funny stares from people, no one clutches their purse, or moves to the far side of the sidewalk because you are walking by.  It's a homey vibe, and you fit right in.

2.  The People - While attending an HBCU, you get the chance to interact with tons of people from all over the world that look just like you!  Almost everyone at an HBCU has similar backgrounds, goals, and struggles so it is easier to relate to your peers.  When one person accomplishes something major at an HBCU, everyone feels the win.

3.  The History - Every HBCU has a story behind its doors.  Either it's a college/university where a sorority or fraternity was first established, or it's a college/university that educated profound leaders like Thurgood Marshall, talented actors like Taraji P. Henson, or creative souls like Erykah Badu.

4.  The Education - The education you receive at an HBCU is priceless.  When I took my first film course at Howard University, I learned so much about African American filmmakers that I never knew!  A friend of mine from Nigeria once said to me that he learned more about Africa at his HBCU than he did from living there.

5.  Life Lessons – HBCU’s tend to prepare students for life.  Most HBCU campuses aren't blessed with state-of-the-art facilities and the latest technology.  Long lines are nothing to us because we learn how to endure them on the first day of registration.  If a child doesn’t already have tough skin, they will surely develop it at an HBCU.  Our students have to work harder than students at other schools to be noticed and to receive the accolades we deserve.  Therefore, when we graduate and go out into the real world, we are equipped to endure whatever comes our way and ready to put our best foot forward.

An HBCU is more than just an institution.  It’s a familiar world within an unfamiliar world that cultivates as well as indoctrinates our kids.  HBCU’s not only prepare students for jobs, but also for life and the many injustices that come along with it.

I'm proud to say that I am a HBCU Graduate (Grambling State University '03 and Howard University '06), and I thoroughly represent it through my actions, accomplishments, and perseverance.  Check out my HBCU Grad tee below that I purchased from HBCUGRADshirts.com (they have other cool shirts as well).  You all know I love a good t-shirt, especially one that states the truth.

Cool Breeze

June 16, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Style

The scene is set inside a gray brick house in Monroe, LA; circa 1998.  My mother is either in the kitchen cooking, writing an article, asking my brother if he forgot to do something, or exercising - or she’s probably doing all the things I just named simultaneously (yea, she does the most).  I’m ducked off in my pink bedroom, probably listening to Junior Mafia on the radio and writing down outfits I want to wear to the upcoming high school football game.  My daddy emerges from his nap to prepare for his night shift at work……and it goes like this.

Daddy:  *yells* Where are my jeans?!?

Me: * suddenly stop writing and my eyes get big*

Daddy:  *enters my room* Sam, where are my jea…..!? *he looks down and frowns*

Me: (I’m busted, so I confess) I’m wearing them!

That’s about how the conversations between my daddy and I used to go when it came to his jeans.  It was something about the jeans he purchased that fit me just how I liked, so I wore them....often.  Fast forward about 18 years later, and I proudly own a pair of his jeans.

My mother used to tell me stories about how my daddy used to dress and the nice style he possessed.  My mother and I actually had a respectful disagreement over who was going to inherit his army coat that he wore when he was 19 years old.  I was able to take a picture in the coat (see below), but it went home with my mother right after the photo was taken *sad face*.

I remember my daddy buying authentic Ostrich and Snakeskin boots, and I used to be like “what are those??”  Now days, I would run a mile non-stop for some Ostrich boots (and I despise running)!!  My daddy, whose friends nicknamed him Cool Breeze because he was as cool as the breeze, once told me that a person has style if they can wear just about anything and make it look good.  I wholeheartedly agree with him, and I am blessed to say that I had a father who didn’t wear the typical daddy stuff (matching plaid shirts and shorts) that usually embarrasses the heck out of kids.

Check out Cool Breeze’s style from back in the day below.

Vietnam era.

I need the jacket above today!

Don't hurt 'em with the platform shoes daddy!!  Classic!

Happy Father’s Day Daddy!  I’m so grateful for our time, our talks, your jokes, your advice, and that you have always purchased great jeans (check the ones above out)!!!!  Love ya!

Happy Father’s Day to my brother Brad and all of the father’s out there.  Without you guys our hearts would be heavy, and our closets would be only half full!!

P.S. - There's still time to subscribe to the blog for your chance to win a GIFT CARD for your style needs.  I will be announcing the winner next Friday!

Have a safe and great weekend everyone!

H&M Fringe Skirt

Fringe Benefits

June 14, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Style

I love a good skirt, especially a skirt with benefits.  The fringe on this skirt adds flair to what would have been a normal skirt.  Right when I put it on, I suddenly got the urge to shimmy, shake and twirl.  Fringe is what I call fun fashion!

H&M Fringe Skirt

H&M Fringe Skirt

I paired my fringe skirt (similar one here) with an old denim jacket (similar one here and here) that I sliced and cut up myself for a little more edge.  Adding my cap and denim jacket to the fringe skirt allows me to mix a sporty look with a dressy look.  I'm able to play out my chic vibe and my “around the way” girl vibe at the same time.

H&M Fringe Skirt

My shoes are some oldie but goodies from Steven Madden (somewhat of a similar pair here), and my cap is from Private Stock BR.

H&M Fringe Skirt

Some may think that caps only go with certain types of looks – scratch that myth.  Now I probably wouldn’t wear a baseball cap with a formal dress (I don't think), but I would definitely put it on with a lot of dainty looks to add a little attitude to the ensemble.

Thanks for stopping by!  Please keep the Orlando victims and their families in your prayers as I will do the same.  Stay positive and grind it out for the rest of the week everyone…..talk to you soon!

Hey don’t forget to subscribe to the blog if you haven’t already done so.  I will be giving away a GIFT CARD to one of my readers soon!

Sass + Sushi

June 12, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Style

I met a friend this past Saturday at this sushi spot named Tsunami.  I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere.  Women were celebrating, men were laughing, young girls were taking pictures, and the waiters and waitresses were bustling about the restaurant.  It looked like a scene out of the popular television series, Sex and The City; therefore, I ordered a martini to pay homage to the show and to toast my fabulous surroundings.

For this occasion, I wanted to let my hair hang and add a little sass to the mix. I decided to wear my favorite color combo (black and white).  I chose my American Apparel Disco Pants (they fit like a glove!) and my Shane Crop Peplum Top I purchased last year but never found the right moment to sport it.  Got a wedding to attend this summer or a fancy soiree?  This top will be perfect for either event with a knee-length pencil skirt or some high-waist, wide-leg trousers.

My shoes were a simple, ankle-strap sandal from Steve Madden and my purse came from Aldo.  I even did my own manicure!  I took a nude OPI polish (Tickle My France-y) and polished my whole nail, then I used a black color by Essie (Licorice) to adorn my nails with dots.

I had a cool time.  It was nice to get away from the hustle and kick back.  Now it's back to the grind!

Feeling the blog?  If so, please share it with a friend so that we can conjure up a style revolution!

Peace and Blessings!

11 Wardrobe Must-Haves

11 Wardrobe Must-Haves!

June 09, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Must-haves, Style, Style Review

Let’s be real style pimps, buying loads of clothing, shoes, and accessories on a regular basis is freakin’ expensive!  Once you get a chance to buy one trend, another one is already out which makes it hard to keep up *insert tired face here*!  Don’t trip, I’m here to alleviate as much fashion stress as possible.

Listed below are 11 wardrobe must-haves that I believe will have your closet set for decades.  By having these fashion staples you will be ready for almost any event, and you will be able to continually build your wardrobe around these core items.  With that being written…...let’s get our wardrobes in check!

1.       Leather or Patent Leather Pumps – If you don’t have any other shoe, get you some neutral colored pumps!  These shoes will go with just about anything, and they are timeless!  (Pictured below, PROTO Steve Madden Pumps)

PROTO Steve Madden Pumps

2.      A Quality Purse – It’s fun to buy little dainty purses here and there for different occasions but investing in a sturdy, leather handbag is smart.  This bag will ride with you forever and if it happens to break, a shoe or leather shop can quickly get it back right. (Pictured below, Reversible Vegan Leather Tote Bag)

Reversible Vegan Leather Tote Bag

3.      A Good Pair of Jeans – Most of us have those favorite pair of jeans that fit us just right and bring all the boys to the yard.  If you don’t, what are you doing??? Find those perfect jeans and rock them as often as you like!  I personally like Urban Oufitters' BDG jeans because they are quality and have just the right amount of stretch.  When looking for jeans, make sure it has at least 2-3 % spandex for comfort and stretch.  (Pictured below, BDG Twig High-Rise Skinny Jeans)

BDG Twig High-Rise Skinny Jeans

4.      Blazer – A nice fitting blazer (any color) is a major staple for your closet.  You can wear a blazer with so many different looks (work, play, church, etc.), and it’s a piece that will never go out of style. (Pictured below, HM Blazer)

HM Blazer

5.      LBD – Every woman should have at least one “little black dress” in her closet.  Throw this on for a date or outing with your friends, pair it with your pumps and maybe your blazer, and you are good to go! (Pictured below, Scoop Neck Bodycon Dress)

Scoop Neck Bodycon Dress

6.      Stylish Flats – Ladies, our feet can definitely use a break at times.  Stylish flats allow your feet to rest while keeping you fashionable at the same time.  (Pictured below, WHITNEE Steve Madden Flats)

WHITNEE Steve Madden Flats

7.      Tennis Shoes – Purchase at least one pair of fly tennis shoes for sporty outfits and for activities that call for lots of walking/exercising or traveling. (Pictured below, Adidas Original Superstar Sneaker)

Adidas Original Superstar Sneaker

8.      A Dressy Watch – Watches add a little pizazz to your outfits.  A dressy watch will not only help you keep up with the time, but it will also add some flair to your look.  (Pictured below, ASOS Minimal Mesh Large Face Watch)

ASOS Minimal Mesh Large Face Watch

9.      Blue Jean Jacket/Bomber Jacket/Trench Coat – Personally I think you need all three, but depending on what climate you are in, at least one of these jackets will suit you.  Neither will ever go out of style, and they allow you to be warm in the most chic way. (Pictured below, Bomber Jacket, Blue Jean Jacket, Trench Coat)

Bomber Jacket, Trench Coat, Blue Jean Jacket

10.  White Blouse – A boyfriend blouse or a tailored blouse can be worn with EVERYTHING!!!!!!! (Pictured below, ASOS Oversized Boyfriend White Shirt)

11.  Pencil Skirt/Trousers – The pencil skirt or trousers can be worn to church or work with your white blouse or to an evening event with a crop top.  (Pictured below, HM Pencil Skirt, ASOS Wide Leg Pleat Pants)

HM Pencil Skirt, ASOS Wide Leg Pleat Pants

So there you have it, 11 things that can provide you with the blueprint for a fabulous wardrobe.  At least 6 outfits can be created from the list above.  After accumulating some of these staples, you are well on your way to style success!

NonConformist

June 05, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Chokolat Creme, Style, Must-haves

You all remember my girl Priscilla, right?  She was the bike I found at an antique shop for $60. She has been in plastic surgery for a couple of weeks getting worked on by my father, and now she's out.  Check out her new look below.

Non Conformist Tee - Chokolat Creme

My daddy did his thing on Prissy!

I've been riding her like crazy!  When the weather doesn't permit a bike ride, I actually have an attitude lol.

Non Conformist Tee - Chokolat Creme

In this blog post I'm wearing my NonConformist Tee from Chokolat Creme, some Adidas high-top tennis (old), and some jeans that I cut to make shorts.  My NC Tee is perfect for the summer months because it's a light material, and it's sleeveless.  The meaning behind this shirt is stay true to your convictions, and don't conform to societal views or perceptions.  Wearing this shirt is my way of honoring the life of one of the biggest nonconformist I know - Muhammad Ali.  Rest easy Champ!

Have a productive week everyone!  I'll be talking to you soon on here. XO!

It's the weekend so kick back and dress comfortable!  I love wearing stylish fashion that is low maintenance (especially on the weekends), and my Adidas Tights fit right into the low-maintenance fashion category.  They are thick enough to cover your goods, yet light enough to wear during the summer months with just the right amount of stretch.  I paired my tights with two other low-maintenance fashion staples - the Birkenstock Sandals from my wish list (yup, I got them!), and my new favorite Urban Renewal Recycled Camo tee from Urban Outfitters.  Expect to see this t-shirt often because it fits me just right, it can be worn so many ways, and it's recycled!

Have a safe and fun weekend everyone!

Any specific plans?

The Five Musts

May 31, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Energy

Happy Hump Day!  I wanted to share some motivational/insightful information to carry you through the rest of the week.  Some time ago I read a book by John Assaraf titled The Answer.  This book touched on how to grow a business, achieve financial freedom, and live an extraordinary life by applying the law of attraction to your world.  The law of attraction simple means reprogramming your conscious brain to envision positive things for your life.  The more you envision these positive things, the more your subconscious brain is changed.  As a result, you will automatically work hard towards what you believe you should have, and positive things will come.

In this book, Assaraf lists five key elements that must be in place in order to achieve major success.  Check them out below.

  • You must find something that stirs your soul.
  • You must become excellent at it.
  • You must recondition your mind to believe you can have it and achieve it.
  • You must understand how to make money at it.
  • You must take daily action.

I wrote these five things down and have carried them with me since reading this book.  I read them over every so often to keep them at the forefront of my brain.  When I took them out to read them last week, I thought sharing them with you guys would be cool.  Take heed and believe!

White Linen Blazer, HM Linen Shorts

A White Affair

May 30, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Style

I went home for Memorial Day Weekend to see my family and to attend an annual white party given by the Traveling Tigers (a RV club of Monroe, LA) in support of the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation of Monroe, LA.  My original plans were to sit in my place all weekend, rest my brain and catch up on the TV show Blackish.  However, my friend and mother insisted that I join them at the party.  I said to myself "Why not go? I can rest my brain while I'm driving."  My last minute commitment to this event meant that I had to do some last minute shopping which was right up my alley.

In a hurry to piece an all white outfit together, I purchased an off white, linen/cotton blazer from Gap and paired it with some white, linen/rayon shorts from H&M.  I threw on some nude Steve Madden ankle pumps (old) and proceeded to the party to let my hair down - and let my hair down I did.  See below.

Gap Linen Blazer, H&M Linen Shorts, Steve Madden Nude Ankle Pumps

Mommy dearest and big brother.

The band played one of our favorite songs by the Isley Brothers - For the Love of You.  It was only right we showed the band our appreciation for their excellent music taste by two-stepping.

The effects of the Crown Royal began to kick in at this point.

The Crown Royal totally took over.

I had the most fun that I have had in a while at this party with my family and friends.  It's good to let loose every now and then.  Unwinding and enjoying life makes working hard even more purposeful.

Hope you all enjoyed your Memorial Day Weekend.  Thank you to the soldiers who fought and died for our country.  Have a bomb week everyone and thanks for stopping by.....I'm grateful (and hungover).

Cheers!

H&M Men's Shirt, cut-off shorts, Aldo Pumps

A Man's Shirt in a Woman's World

May 27, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Style

Here’s a little secret – I love wearing men’s shirts and jeans!  Not all of their shirts and jeans, just some of them.  When I was younger I used to wear my brother’s shirts sometimes, and I would wear my daddy’s jeans quite often.  The fit was more comfortable and the baggy look was popular during those days.  Then I went through a stage where I didn’t want to wear anything but women’s clothing.  Now I’m back in my menswear stage, but I mix and match it with women’s clothing to give it a more feminine feel.

H&M Men's Shirt, cut-off shorts, Aldo Shoes

H&M Men's Shirt, cut-off shorts, Aldo Shoes

I’m wearing a men’s H&M collar shirt and it is currently on sale for $9.99!  Of course the black and white colors attracted me to the shirt, but the pattern of the shirt is what stood out the most.

H&M Men's Shirt

I paired my H&M button up shirt with some homemade shorts.  I have literally been cutting off every pair of jeans in my closet.  I’m obsessed with cutting, and I’m running out of jeans…someone schedule an intervention for me soon, please!  For my shoes, I am wearing my Aldo off-white pumps (currently sold-out).  I wanted to wear an ankle bracelet (haven’t owned one in years but now I want one again) so I turned one of my thick, chain necklaces into one.  It’s over-the-top and gaudy – just what I was going for.  My purse is an old accessory I picked up from Forever 21 years ago.

This fashion thing is not only limited to clothing that is made for your gender.  If you see a fashion item that wasn’t made for you but you like it, make it work.

Have a safe Memorial Day weekend! And while you’re eating barbecue or whatever, tell a friend to check out my blog….it would make me blush! LOL

Beachwear on the Bayou

May 24, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Style

I’ve been wanting to hit a beach for the last few months so that I can kick back and wear cute swimsuits and short shorts.  Since I haven’t been able to get to the beach, I decided to flex my beach wear on the bayou baaaaaby!

There are no beautiful, white sand beaches this side of the Mississippi River – only murky waters, swamps, moss and grass (welcome to the dirty south).  Ladies, we don’t need to be at the beach to wear our beach attire, we can jazz it up and wear it wherever.  Check it out below.

Swimsuit as a bodysuit

Swimsuit as bodysuit and oversize blue jean dress as cover up

Swimsuit as bodysuit and white cut-off shorts

If you end up not taking a beach vacation, your swimwear does not have to suffer!  Use your one-piece swimsuit as a bodysuit or wear your swimsuit cover ups as outerwear.  This is a creative way to make good use of your swimwear instead letting it sit in your closet until you finally get that dreamy beach vacation.

In these pictures, I am wearing an oversize blue jean shirt dress as outerwear, my American Apparel swimsuit as a bodysuit (I love the cut of their swimsuits and bodysuits), some cut-off shorts that I created from some old jeans, and my Steve Madden comfy sandals (currently on sale).  This outfit is ideal for a night-out with the girls, a social event, or festival.

Oversize blue jean shirt dress

American Apparel Swimsuit

Steve Madden Sofiia Sandals

There’s no rule that says you can’t wear your beach attire in the city or even your city attire on the beach!  Just be as creative as possible, and the fashion possibilities will be infinite!

What beach look would you rock in the city?

Saturday on Magazine Street

May 21, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Style

I spent Saturday with my friend Jewel and her daughter, my goddaughter, Kai.  They are moving next week, and we wanted to get some quality time in before they left.  Children are so funny and honest to me, and it's cool just to be in their presence.  They are some of the most interesting little creatures.

Jewel and I are in the process of training Kai on how to take pictures (don't judge us). Above she was looking at the passer-by like "lady, please get out of our pic!"  Since there were too many distractions in that area, I found another area for her to pose in with her mother, and Kai brought it!  Check them out below.

Isn't this the cutest picture?  Kai was not taking this picture without her toy ponies.  She strategically positioned them in front of her before she struck her pose lol.  Oh and Kai's entire outfit (shoes and all) was purchased from a consignment shop.  Parents, don't sleep on consignment shops for your kids. You can find the most stylish outfits for half the price!  Also, rompers are definitely a summer staple.  Jewel's lace romper is a stylish way to stay cool and beat the heat.

Above is a more detailed look at my outfit.  I threw on an old unitard (all in one suit) that I've had for years (I'm currently searching for a new one), a flannel shirt from Forever 21 to tie around my waist, and the most comfortable tennis shoes ever!!! These Asics tennis shoes are gel-like, and they conform to your feet.  They are so easy to maneuver, and they have a classic look to them which is why I am really feeling them.  I can't wear them enough!  I got them from an exclusive sneaker boutique in Baton Rouge called Private Stock BR.  If you are looking for some comfortable running shoes, these are it.

Thank you sooooo much for reading my blogs.  I appreciate it more than you know.  Enjoy the rest of your weekend - see you again on here soon!

Bomb Product of the Day!

May 18, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Chokolat Creme, Style

When I was writing and editing for the fashion section at Everything Girls Love (EGL), I met some very interesting, hardworking young ladies.  We all had similar goals, and we supported each other in reaching those goals.  See some of the ladies below.

Pictured from left to right:

Talibah Stewart (@alwayzpretti), Marsha Badger (@marshbarscloset), Tysha (@styledtoatea), Ty Hunter (Beyonce's Stylist!! @tytyrone), me, Kindra Mone (@kindramone).

We all eventually left EGL to pursue our own endeavors, and one of the girls (Marsha Badger) became a fashion writer for one of the top, influential fashion blogs on the web – Fashion Bomb Daily.  This popular blog, started by Claire Sulmers, attracts 2.4 million viewers per month and has been recognized by major publications such as Teen Vogue, Ebony Magazine and Black Enterprise!! Crazy huh?! What’s even crazier is that CHOKOLAT CREME’S FREE MIND TEE WAS FEATURED ON THE SITE AS THE BOMB PRODUCT OF THE DAY!!!!  Marsha looked out for Chokolat Creme, and we can’t be more grateful!

You never know who you are meeting when you encounter different people.  This is a prime example of why not only networking is essential but emitting positive vibes and treating people with courtesy and respect is even more important.  I never knew the ladies I wrote with on a daily basis would turn into some women who would eventually make real power moves.  I admired their hustler mentalities and thought they were some cool, stylish, and fun ladies to work with, and as a result I formed a relationship with them.  I’m so glad I met them and cultivated a genuine connection with them – not for the resources but because we are like-minded women who love helping other women achieve their goals.  This is a rare thing nowadays, and I’m blessed to say that I have met such women.

April (Chokolat Creme’s other half) and I are crazy happy and proud about this moment.  When I called her after I got the notification, she hung up in my face lol!  That is what we do when the other one calls with some crazy news (we are weird but it works for us lol).

Now it’s time to turn up the hustle and dig deeper.

But before we jump back on the grind, can we take 2 hours to bask in this wonderful moment, please (insert tired face here)????

Click here to purchase your Free Mind Tee.  Hurry, they are going fast thanks to our feature!

Curves R My Movement Fashion Show

May 15, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Style

I was invited to a fashion show Saturday evening that literally opened my eyes.  The Curves R My Movement Fashion Show proved that women with curves are on the rise, and they can style and get in formation just like any other lady.  Go girls!

Under the direction of Ashley Cherry (Instagram - @curvesrmymovement_ceo), Curves R My Movement was created to celebrate and empower our thick sisters.  The fashion show was very entertaining because it demonstrated just how versatile fashion is.  There are a lot of fashion myths that apply to curvy girls such as they should only wear the color black because it slims, or long skirts and dresses look best on their figure, but this fashion show proved that those myths are no longer valid.

Pictured above was the host of the event - celebrity plus size model Rosie Mercado.  I love her dress!

My girl Georgette ripped the runway during this show, and she killed it!!!

These ladies showed up and showed out!  Confidence is everything!  It's not about what you are wearing, it's about how you are wearing it.  What is on the inside translates to the outside.

The designers that were featured in the pictures above are Rain Wear (cocotwist.com), Fashionista Boutique (www.fashion-i-sta.com), F.A.T - Fashionable and Thick (www.fashionableandthick.net), and Dzire Boutique (www.dzireboutique.com).

Above is what I wore to the event.  I decided to go with my favorite black jeans, a dress that I wore as a blouse and my Steve Madden COMFORTABLE heels.  I could have gone another 10 hours in those shoes!

Where are all my thick-fine women at???!!  It's your time to shine!

One Outfit, Two Ways - The ASOS Minimal Jumpsuit

May 11, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Style

I finally purchased the Minimal Jumpsuit from ASOS (which was on my wishlist), and boy am I glad I did!  This loose-fitting jumpsuit is so comfortable and versatile.  It will be getting plenty of wear throughout the year.

After taking these pictures, I met my girls for lunch.  We had a lot of catching up to do and me and this jumpsuit were both ready for some good conversation.

I'm definitely digging the pockets on the jumpsuit.  Having pockets on clothes gives me comfort for some reason.  During those awkward moments when I'm talking to people or just walking and I don't know what to do with my hands, I place them in my pockets and feel safe lol.

My Adidas really match up well with this jumpsuit.  It gives my effortless look some edge.  This is a perfect look for daytime events, festivals or even concerts.  However, if you have a dinner date, art show, or evening soiree to attend, simply throw the Adidas to the side and jazz it up with some heels.  It transforms very well.

To take my jumpsuit to an evening look, I added some eye-catching heels, a small purse and a belt.

This jumpsuit is a great purchase.  Clothing pieces that can be worn many different ways allow you to save money and express your creativity.  I can't wait to wear this jumpsuit with some flat sandals, a blazer or my oversized blue jean jacket.

Before I sign off, guess what?  I found the bike that was on my wishlist as well!  The best part about finding the bike was that I got it for an excellent price!  I was on a road trip, and while driving and singing along to some Jill Scott, I spotted an antique shop on the side of the highway.  I did a double take when I saw her (my bike) sitting out in the front saying, "Sam!! Let me roll girl!"  I politely did a u-turn and went to go get my bike.  When I made it back to the antique shop I was elated to discover that the bike was only $60!  I purchased that bike quick and went on about my business.  Ladies and gents, meet Priscilla.

I gave her the name Priscilla because that is the first name that came to my mind upon meeting her (I have no idea how my mind works).   Now Prissy (her nickname) needs some work done, but nonetheless she is still a doll.  My father is currently fixing her up to my liking.  Once she is done, I will show her off to you guys.

Enjoy the rest of your week sweethearts and remember to count it all joy!

I Get it from My MAMA!

May 05, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Style

Some of my fondest memories as a little girl include watching my mother get dressed up for events.  While she prepared for her outings, I would sit at the edge of her bed and study her.  I asked several questions about what she was wearing and where she was going.  Her outfits were always classy with a touch of sass, and her jewelry consisted of gold, diamonds and pearls every now and then.  She kept her makeup to a minimum, she always had a small, dainty purse to accommodate each look, and she completed every outfit with a spray of White Diamonds or Chanel No. 5 perfume.

On occasions my mother would get me all dressed up as well, comb my hair into an elegant bun or French roll, give me a little dainty purse of my own to carry, and take me to the Ebony Fashion Fair runway shows.  This was my first exposure to high-end fashion.  I was in awe.  Attending these shows and observing my mother's love for fashion ignited a style beast inside of me.  I knew at a young age that fashion would definitely be my outlet through which I express my art.

As a result of my style exposure, I started feeding my fashion addiction very early.  Emulating my mother’s style, I would dress up in her slips, nightgowns, socks and heels.  I chose her slips and nightgowns because they seemed easier to tailor to my little body (great fashion sense for a style amateur huh?!).  I would add a belt around my waist to make sure the outfit would fit as perfect as possible, and then I would politely pose for pictures.

Style plays a huge role in my family.  My mother and her sisters are the first people I have ever seen turn up the collars on their shirts and jackets.  I took this style technique from them and incorporated it in my looks that include jackets with collars.  Check my mother, aunts, and grandmother out below.  My mother is in the black and white, my grandmother is in the front with her head turned to the side, and my aunts are surrounding them.  Excuse my brother and his photo bombing antics.

I love that my mother understands the need to have several pairs of shoes and a few different closets full of clothes.  This, among many reasons, is why we connect!  When I call her about an outfit or a pair shoes I want that I know I don't need, her usual response is "Buy it Sam."  Man...isn't my mother the bomb?!!

Check out some more stylish pictures of my mother below to see why I get it from my Mama!

Above my mother is pictured with one of her favorite poets, Dr. Maya Angelou.  In this picture she is wrapped in her fur coat looking very "Manhattan 5th Avenue."  I need that coat Ma!

Here she is pictured with my grandmother in her silk suit. My mother loves silk, rayon and leather.  Her style advice to me is to always purchase quality fabrics that will last.

Above is my favorite cocktail dress that my mother owns.  Reasons being, it's my go-to color combination (black and white) and it's timeless.  She has had it for double digit years, and it steals the show ‘til this day.

I love my mother dearly for encouraging me to express myself through style.  She taught me that carrying yourself in a positive way makes you even more stylish.  I thank God I have great women in my life like my mother, aunts, and grandmother influencing not only my style but my character as well.  I will definitely take a lot of things they taught me on my journey in life, and I will keep our style legacy alive!

I love you Big P!  Happy Mother's Day!!

Happy Mother's Day to all of the mothers out there!

What type of style/fashion advice did your mother give you?

The Maturation of Samjah Iman

May 01, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Energy

We made it through another week!

Last week got kind of challenging for me, but I gave it my all.  I didn't complain though because it's all about becoming the fearless woman I am meant to be. I welcome challenges because they equip me for this journey I am on.  Below are three things I took from last week that I will share in hopes to inspire you as well:

1. Let it go - This is a lesson I am constantly learning everyday of my life.  I once read a quote that said "The world is won by those who let it go." - Lao Tzu.  Now to me this quote doesn't mean do nothing.  It simply means give it your best then give it to God.  This upcoming week I will give each task and situation my all, then set it free for the universe to work its magic.

2.  Embrace growth - Growth can be uncomfortable at times but necessary.  The only constant thing in the world is change, and if you don't change you don't grow.  When you grow as a person, your art (or passion) is broaden.  You see the world differently.  We must read more, explore new things, socialize and hear new perspectives.  It helps us to sprout mentally.  I am making a vow to embrace change and growth which will inevitably expand my art.

3.  Stay true - Make sure you can look yourself in the mirror every day and be comfortable with the person you are staring at.  I will embody authenticity in everything I do, think and feel.  This strengthens my sense of self and clears my conscious.  "The key to failure is trying to please everybody." - Bill Cosby.  Please yourself!  This makes you happy and everyone around you happy as well.

Have an awesome week everyone!  Enjoy the journey, let it go, embrace growth, stay true and keep the faith!

A Skirt with a Side of Timbs...

April 25, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Style

“Wipe the sweat off my dome, spit the phlegm on the streets / Suede Timbs on my feet makes my cipher complete.” - NAS

Timberland Boots (Timbs) represent a cool but rugged look.  They are a classic, multi-purpose boot that will remain popular for years to come.  Whenever I see a man or lady rocking a pair of Timbs, my heart tells me that they may know a little something about styling.

My Timbs were a great investment.  They are timeless, comfortable, fly and can be worn with many different looks like a skirt.

This simple look I put together was very cost-efficient (minus the Timbs).  The shirt was $9.99, and the skirt was on sale for $4.99 (regular price was $49.99)!  I love finding quality items for low prices.  It makes shopping that much more enjoyable.

With this outfit, I mixed-and-matched stripes.  I took a black and white striped shirt and paired it with a navy blue and light blue striped skirt.  I threw my red purse in the mix to add a little color.

This outfit is a perfect pick for a concert or event that you want to be cute but comfortable at.  It will allow you to concentrate on having a good time instead of concentrating on your aching feet in those high heels!

I hope this post gave you some outfit inspiration for future occasions.  Have a peaceful week, and remember to remain authentic and grateful!

P.S. – Fly high, Prince…your beautiful art will forever live in our minds and souls!

In Love with the Cocoa

April 17, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Energy, People

I got a chance to check out the movie Barbershop: The Next Cut this past Saturday; I was pleased.  I enjoyed the cast, the message behind the film, and I especially enjoyed the barbershop talk.  The discussions in this movie were real, unfiltered and essential.  They were about men, women, politics, race, social media and a whole other slew of things that peaked my interest.  However, there was one particular discussion, touched on briefly by the cast, that stuck out to me - black women, their weave shenanigans and black men's love for women who resemble Kim Kardashian.  One sister in the shop raised a good point and made a few comments pointing out that some of our men don't appreciate our natural attributes.  The discussion then turned to actress/model Lupita Nyong'o, her hair and how most men wouldn't want their woman rocking that hair style because it doesn't represent the typical standard of beauty in America.  Some of the men disagreed and implied that they could appreciate a woman with Lupita's characteristics.  This made me think.  Do some of our men suddenly have a strong affinity for the cocoa and our kinky locks? Are they finally waking up?  This discussion reminded me of an article I wrote a couple years ago.  See an excerpt below.

According to social media, quite a few men are in love with Lupita's looks.  Coming from SOME men, I find this hard to believe because we live in a society where her attributes (dark skin and a short natural hair-do) are not the criteria for beauty.  Most of our men are suckers for long hair and light skin.  I'm not blaming the brothers for their inflexible interests because we all have been socially constructed by music, television, social media, and some magazines to believe that lighter skin and long hair equate beauty.  As kids, the media shaped our views of beauty and had us believing that long flowing hair and slightly tanned skin were the things to like.  If you didn't have a parent reinforcing and praising other images of beauty like afros and coffee-colored skin, you were not conditioned to appreciate the type of beauty Lupita brings to the table.
There is an abundance of Lupitas working in Wal-Mart, pumping gas at the gas station, in the hood, riding the bus, etc.  Therefore, if men are really into Lupita and her features like they claim to be, then they would date someone who resembles her.

I wrote the piece above because at the time I felt some of our brothers weren't keeping it real.  I knew of a few men personally who wouldn't look twice at most of the girls who possessed dark skin and kinky hair but claimed that they were Lupita's #1 fan probably because she was trending at the time.  Fast forward two years later, and a lot of people seem to be amazed by these African characteristics.  The world seems to be catching on and celebrating different hair types and all the shades of our people.  Is the appreciation for our culture real or are some people still on the pro-black bandwagon because it's popular now?  I truly believe that some of this new found love is due to having more brown skin women portrayed in the mainstream media.  These days commercials feature black women with natural hair and dark skin tones.  Seeing more images of ourselves constantly can influence our views in a positive way, and it gives other brown skin women the courage and confidence to celebrate their beauty proudly.

Nowadays, there are several blogs dedicated to just black women and natural hair and paraphernalia being created that celebrates our beauty and uniqueness.  Hell, now the hair stores even sell kinky weave and faux dreadlocks!  I am truly amazed by it all.

I am loving the era that we are are currently in, and I pray it continues.  I am so glad that our little girls have women in the media like Lupita Nyong'o and others to make them feel beautiful and give them hope.  Black people come in all shades of brown, and we have many different hair textures; this is what makes us beautiful.  We are diversity at its finest!

P.S. - Shout out to the women who don't need the media's permission to love themselves, and shout out to the men who have been down with the sisters before it was cool!
