What I'm No Longer Praying For in the Midst of Chaos…

March 04, 2020 by Samjah Iman in Energy, Style, Motivation

I remember being trapped in a horrible job situation or at a low point in life and feverishly praying for things to get better quickly, and all I got in return was the same situation…day after day. Of course we don’t get everything we pray for, for a reason, but that doesn’t stop the disappointment or frustration that comes with the wait. When going through burdensome times, I would often ask religious people how to pray, and some would tell me I had to constantly ask God for what I wanted. Others would advise me to tell God what I desired once, and patiently wait for the results. I tried both ways…..and I still felt out of alignment with prayer.

I believe that everything happens in due time, but the prayer situation still boggles my mind from time to time. So in an effort to ease some of my confusion, I talked to my mother about my concerns. She expressed that she had been having the same questions herself. She told me that she could remember as a youngster praying every single night, pleading with God to end the Vietnam War. Her prayers were eventually answered, 10 YEARS LATER.

I am an extremely spiritual person, and I wholeheartedly believe in the power of prayer. I also believe God gave us the tools we need to bring forth what we desire; hence manifestation. But when someone is going through tough times, they don’t want to wait 10 years, 10 months, or even 10 minutes for their prayers to be answered. So after praying for some of the same things every single night without results, I felt the need to shift my prayer perspective. I’d been feeling this way for a while, and because I was ready to receive some guidance on this matter….it came.

During one of my usual Sunday morning rituals, I was searching for some teachings on YouTube when I ran across a TD Jakes’ sermon. I can’t remember what the entire sermon was about, but he definitely said some words that gave me the insight I was seeking. He spoke about Noah’s ark and how it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. He related that to the current struggles people go through and how they wait everyday to be released from them. And his advice for that was, “get comfortable and ride it out.” It was a “duh Sam!” moment for me. Jakes was basically saying, instead of constantly agonizing over your situation - just roll with it until it shifts. Of course it’s not that simple to do when you’re experiencing hardship, but it’s the best thing you can do at the moment because you’re in the storm for a reason. And if you endure, you will come out greater than you were before you went in. But you have to go through the process to get to the other side - no matter how long it takes. And if you abort the process too early, you may not reach your full potential. TD Jakes’ words reminded me of a line I read in The TAO of WU (thanks for the book recommendation Chris!). In that book, Rza (founding Wu-tang member) said that through experience he learned to trust chaos and confusion instead of judging it, fearing it, or trying to reach an immediate solution. He said that this was not only his secret to production, it’s also the secret to life. After listening to Jakes and reflecting on Rza’s words, everything began to make sense. Instead of trying to pray my way out of storms, I will accept what is, ride it out, and stay in alignment. Because the last thing I want to do is disrupt any incubation process that I am supposed to undergo in order to reach the next step of wisdom or blessings. I will no longer pray for storms to end, things to begin, or things to turn around. I will visualize the outcome I want, stay fixated on that vision, ask God to keep me in alignment, change my perspective, and bless me with the strength to hang in there until my shift comes. Remember, when you grapple with something it rebels, when you leave it alone it flows.

Both the beauty and scary part of life is that we don’t know what it will bring. However, what we do know is positive things will happen as will chaos. My prayer for you all and myself is that more positive shows up in our lives than chaos. And when the chaos comes, I pray that we trust it and view it as a breeding process necessary for our growth. May God grant us the endurance we need to ride these waves until calmer waters come.

On a Mind Diet

January 09, 2019 by Samjah Iman in Style

I was in a lounge area of an office waiting on some paperwork to be completed. In the waiting area, they had about three flat screen televisions mounted on different walls, and on each television set was some tragic news. On one television set a lady had been killed by her daughter, on another a veteran had been robbed, and on another one Trump was throwing a tantrum. Although I wanted to turn my head away from the television sets, I couldn’t. I was engrossed in the calamity, and slowly but surely worry started to creep into my soul. Then I reminded myself of some profound advice a dear friend shared with me years ago; “monitor what you monitor.” Pondering over his words, I declared right in that office that I was putting my mind on a diet.

Of course all negativity isn’t avoidable but if I can help it, I refuse to participate in anything that’s not going to inspire me, make me feel good, or make me laugh. My mind is the portal through which my dreams are born. Why would I cluster it up with anything that will stop that process? Just like I so carefully monitor what foods I put in my body, I need to do the same thing when it comes to my mind. I wouldn’t constantly feed my body junk food throughout the day because I know the results would not be in my favor. The same thing goes for the brain. Constantly feeding it figurative junk food will only put the mind in an unhealthy space.

Always remember that you are what you consume…..watch your mental weight.

Peace & Blessings,

Voting in Vintage

November 05, 2018 by Samjah Iman in Style

I would be remiss if I didn’t do my part to stress the importance of voting tomorrow and show off this vintage blazer I got for $24! LOL!

Anyway, If you’re following this blog then I already know you are extremely conscious and have all the sense in the world (smile); therefore, voting in the one of the most crucial elections is on your agenda tomorrow. But just in case you’re tripping and thinking about not voting tomorrow, below are five quick reasons that will hopefully get your mind right.

  1. Your life and your family’s lives depend on it. Too much craziness is happening in this world for you not to use your powerful voice.

  2. Trump

  3. Your ancestors went through hell for you to have the right to vote, honor them by using it.

  4. Trump

  5. Voting allows you to decide what will happen with your life regarding laws, healthcare, equal opportunities, etc. Not voting puts the decision in the people’s hands who could care less about our lives.

If these 5 reasons don’t move you to vote, I have a few more that I wrote about here. Check it out.

Also, you can grab a blazer like this vintage one here. And my boots are Steve Madden.

Happy voting loves!

My Biggest Stress Reliever

April 26, 2018 by Samjah Iman in Style

The one thing I do that helps me tremendously when I feel anxiety or stress is reminisce.  I begin recalling the past times I've felt defeated and how I overcame each time.

It seems like whenever a stressful problem arises, I initially began to act brand new like I hadn't made it through anything.  Then I stop myself and say, "Girl did you forget about that time when blah blah blah happened.....and you thought it was the end but things suddenly turned around?"  Reminding myself of how I knocked down hurdles in the past gives me the courage to face any present opposition with confidence.

The one thing that usually stresses us out in situations is uncertainty.  Not knowing how things will pan out can literally make us crazy.  But we must remember there were times in the past when we didn't know how we were going to overcome a tough situation - but we did.  The next time you find yourself tripping over your current status, think back to the stressful times you made it through, and I guarantee you'll feel a glimmer of hope.

Peace and Blessings,

- Samjah Iman

Vintage Ralph Lauren Blazer

February 16, 2017 by Samjah Iman in Style

You know what has been getting on my nerves lately?  BRAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know I know I know....I need a bra (sometimes), but I just haven't been feeling like one lately (please don't tell my grandmother).  It's such a restriction, and at this point in my life I (they) refused to be held down!  So I let them go free, and I've discovered that I like them free under blazers.  Blazers are now my new shirts...sans bras.

I want to wear every tailored blazer as a shirt now.  I feel it's such a cool look.  Even if I do pick up the habit of restricting my valuables again (i.e. wearing a bra), I will just wear the bra under a tailored blazer instead of a shirt.  And if the blazer is long enough, I will wear it without a shirt underneath and as a dress.  Blazers are life right now!

If you've been following S&E, then you know I've been obsessing over vintage clothing lately.  I found this plaid, classic Ralph Lauren blazer on @shopvintagebowtique's Instagram page. I paid little to nothing for it.  It was literally a steal.  The purse I am carrying in the pictures also came from @shopvintagebowtique.  It was just $14 people!!!

I'm wishing everyone a beautiful and peaceful weekend.  It would be so nice if I could sleep all weekend and wake up just to eat crawfish then go back to sleep again, but I can't *sad face*.  I got people to see and things to do - everyday I'm hustling.

Say no to restrictions and yes to freedom!

Broadway Swag

January 18, 2017 by Samjah Iman in Style

I went to see the Lion King Broadway Play in New Orleans.  It was beyond amazing!  I love theater and watching people perform.  I was in awe during the entire production.  Art is just absoultely beautiful.

For the event, I decided to dress comfortable, yet nice.  I wanted to be simple with a touch of glam.  Check out my outfit choice below.

I wore a crisp, white top from American Apparel and wide leg ASOS trousers (I purchased the tall fitting pants).  To fancy the look up, I added my vintage blazer from @shopvintagebowtique (Instagram Boutique), some rust colored chandelier earrings (old, similar pair here), and my gold clutch (old, similar one here).

Lately I've been crazy busy, and I don't know if I'm coming or going!!  There was a time when my couch would be my excitement for the evening and weekend....boy have times changed.  My social calendar is out of this world these days, but I'm not complaining.  I always try to appreciate each phase of my life, because eventually - it will change.

Peace and Blessings,

- Samjah Iman

Styling the Eccentric Blazer

September 15, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Style

Keeping it simple is the best way to go when styling eccentric pieces in my opinion.  I like to let the piece that is meant to be the focal point of the outfit stand out on its own without any distractions.  Check out how I styled my colorful, vintage blazer below.

To pull this look together, I simply paired my blazer with a white tank top, high waist shorts, my Cuban Link Choker, and Stan Smith Adidas.  Keeping the rest of my ensemble toned down allowed the blazer to take center stage.  This blazer is another vintage goodie I purchased from @shopvintagebowtique (Instagram).  It is 100% silk and was only $36!

When in doubt, always keep it simple. Now that's some style advice that can be used in life as well.

Have the best weekend ever!! Please share my blog with a loved one when you get a chance.

xoxoxo

The Silk Blazer

August 21, 2016 by Samjah Iman in Style

I do not know who decided to give this blazer away to a thrift store, but I am grateful for their insanity.  When I first laid eyes on this blazer, I did a double take and thanked God for small blessings.  It was love at first sight.

I found this blazer on Instagram from a thrift store called @shopvintagebowtique.  I couldn't believe someone had not purchased it yet (which means it was meant for me).  This blazer is 100% silk, and it cost $36.00!  I was drawn to the print because it reminded me of Versace.  I paired the blazer with a white bodysuit, white cutoff shorts, black Steve Madden heels, a small coin purse (similar one here), and my favorite necklace of the moment which brought the gold colors out in the blazer.

I believe thrift shopping is becoming the new way to shop.  You can find a lot of treasures shopping online or in stores that offer previously owned clothing, and you can save a great deal of money.  If you don't want to take the time to thrift shop on your own, try @shopvintagebowtique or @monicasthriftonabudget on Instagram and let them do the shopping for you.

Have a prosperous week everyone!  Keep the faith!

P.S. - Thank you to everyone that helped me with assisting the family in Baton Rouge who lost all of their belongings due to the flood.  They are overwhelmed with gratefulness.

Peace and Blessings
